10G DAC High Speed Cable with AOC High Speed Cable

Jul. 08, 2021

In addition to 10G network structured cabling solutions, which typically use SFP+ optical modules and fiber patch cords, 10G DAC and AOC high-speed cables are also a cost-effective alternative because of their high performance and low budget features. This article will introduce 10G SFP+ DAC high-speed cables and 10G SFP+ AOC high-speed cables in detail.

10G DAC/AOC High-Speed Cable Introduction

10G DAC high-speed cable a two-core copper wire and the ends of the SFP + connectors, can be directly connected to active devices. DAC high-speed cable contains passive DAC and active DAC, both can be directly through the copper wire transmission of electrical signals. The difference is that the former can transmit without signal modulation, while the latter is equipped with electronic components inside the optical transceiver to enhance the signal. Typically 10G DAC high-speed cables are used between cabling racks to connect switches, servers, and storage devices.

The 10G AOC high-speed cable consists of a multimode fiber optic patch cable with SFP+ connectors attached at both ends and requires an external power supply to complete the optical/electrical signal conversion from electrical to optical and then to electrical. Similar to 10G DAC high-speed cable, 10G AOC high-speed cable is mainly used in data center cabling rack to rack storage devices, switches, and switches and servers interconnection.

What are the application environments for 10G DAC high-speed cable versus AOC high-speed cable?

Depending on the factors mentioned above, 10G DAC high-speed cable and 10G AOC high-speed cable is typically used in different operating environments.

10G DAC high-speed cable typical applications

The primary use of 10G DAC high-speed cable is to connect switches/servers to switches located in the same or adjacent racks, for example, for interconnecting 10GToR switches to server rack ToR switches or for stacking 10G switches. Since 10G SFP+ DAC high-speed cable typically supports 7m links with low power consumption, low latency, and low cost, this DAC high-speed cable solution is an ideal choice for short-distance connections.

In addition, the 10G DAC high-speed cable solution can also be used in high-density ToR scenarios where there are many access layer devices. Such distributed access makes the connection look clear and straightforward, but also increases the difficulty of centralized maintenance and management of the switch.

10G AOC high-speed cable typical applications

10G AOC high-speed cables are typically used in data centers and are used in ToR, EoR, and more. Similar to DAC high-speed cables, 10G AOC high-speed cables can connect ToR switches between network racks and server racks, and can also connect switches within racks up to 100 meters away.

For example, in EoR cabling, servers are connected to switches via 10G AOC high-speed cables, so that a large number of cable connections from multiple server racks converge into the network rack at the side end. This makes cable management more difficult, but centralized maintenance is easier. The solution of using AOC high-speed cables in MoR cabling is basically similar to the EoR solution while simplifying the connections and centralizing the management.
